Success Story: Julio Medina-Cardenas — From Costa Rica to Commuter Rail Success

Meet Julio Medina-Cardenas, a shining example of how hard work, perseverance, and the right support system can transform a life.

Originally from Costa Rica, Julio brought joy to others as a dance instructor at a luxury resort. However, his journey took a bold and inspiring turn when he moved to the United States. Eager to build a new life, he enrolled at the Shriver Job Corps Center, where he studied Carpentry.

While navigating a new country and culture, Julio didn’t just adapt—he thrived. Working in Leisure Time Employment at Buffalo Wild Wings, he dedicated himself to learning English on the job, proving his commitment to personal and professional growth.

His determination caught the attention of TCU/IAM Recruiter Oscar Derderian Jr., who recognized Julio’s potential and encouraged him to join the TCU/IAM Advanced Training Program. Julio took that opportunity and ran with it, earning center honors from the Shriver Center management and TCU instructors.

In June 2014, Julio launched his railroad career with Keolis Commuter Services, starting as a Coach Cleaner at $16.50/hour. But Julio didn’t stop there. His drive and skill led him to quickly transition into a Signalman Trainee role at $18/hour, and soon after, he achieved full Signalman status at $25/hour.

By August 2018, just four years after starting his career, Julio earned a well-deserved promotion to Signal Maintainer. This position reflects both his technical expertise and leadership skills.

What makes Julio’s story truly special is his dedication to giving back. After reaching success in the industry, he returned to the Shriver Center as a part-time instructor, mentoring the next generation of students and sharing his firsthand experience working at Keolis.

Julio Medina-Cardenas is living proof that anything is possible with determination, support, and the right training. His journey—from a Costa Rican dance floor to the signal systems of Boston’s commuter rail—is a powerful reminder of the impact the TCU/IAM program can have.

Congratulations, Julio, and thank you for continuing to inspire others with your story!
